Meet the Rare Red Colobus Monkey
Zanzibar Excursion
Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is Zanzibar's only national park and one of the last remaining areas of indigenous forest on the island. The park protects a remarkable variety of habitats — groundwater forest, mangrove swamps, coral rag scrub, and open grassland — all within a compact area.
The park is most famous for the Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii), a species found nowhere else on earth. These striking monkeys with their red-brown fur and white faces live in troops of 30–50 and are remarkably habituated to human visitors, often coming within arm's reach.
The forest walk also takes you through a mangrove boardwalk where you can observe the extraordinary root systems and learn about the vital role mangroves play in protecting Zanzibar's coastline and marine ecosystems.
Year-round. Monkeys are most active in the early morning. Best combined with a spice farm tour.
