Walk Through 1,000 Years of Swahili History
Zanzibar Excursion
Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its labyrinthine streets, carved wooden doors, coral stone buildings, and bustling bazaars tell the story of a city shaped by Arab, Persian, Indian, African, and European civilisations over more than a thousand years.
Walking through Stone Town is like stepping back in time. You will pass the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), built by Omani Arabs in 1699 on the ruins of a Portuguese church. You will see the House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) — the first building in East Africa to have electricity and an elevator, built by Sultan Barghash in 1883.
The tour also visits the former Slave Market, one of the most powerful and sobering historical sites in East Africa. Zanzibar was the largest slave trading port on the East African coast, and the underground slave chambers and the Anglican Cathedral built on the site of the last slave market tell a story that must not be forgotten.
Stone Town is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, the legendary lead singer of Queen, born Farrokh Bulsara in 1946.
Year-round. Morning tours are cooler and the markets are most lively. Evening tours offer beautiful golden light on the old buildings.
